Echoing Lisa and others, Annie argued that the Biblical example, at least in this case, was not the example that people today were supposed to follow:

I think that we have to take into consideration the politics, the cultural structure of Bible times. Women had to be married, or they weren’t taken care of. They didn’t have rights. They really couldn’t be independent, so if they weren’t married, then they were just shoved to the edges of society. In that time, a man can marry more than one woman because it was a protection for women, not necessarily because it was the ideal. The ideal, like we have now, is based on love and commitment and faith between two people, like commitment to that one person only.
